Over 100 people attended RNAS Culdrose Community Centre's open day which was packed full of family fun including sumo wrestling, a DJ, raffle and plenty of games.

Many of those who went along were new to the centre and took no time in themselves into the festivities. The station's commanding officer, Captain Adrian Orchard was also there and joined in the fun, bravely volunteering to be wrapped head to toe in toilet paper by enthusiastic children.

Naomi Osmond, who runs the community centre, said: “The Captain really got involved which was great for the community centre. He joined in with sumo wrestling with the children and they loved jumping all over him."

There was a steady flow of people throughout the day, and most people who attended had not been to the centre before which was a great opportunity for staff to meet new faces and promote the centre.

There is plenty of enthusiasm and scope for the community centre to host new events and expand its services. Upcoming planned ventures include a youth club and an after school youth forum but new ideas are always welcomed. Naomi is really keen that the community use the centre for their needs and for events to be led by them to help ensure that events are popular and well attended. To support these efforts the centre has applied for funding to buy a pool table and organise activities to tailor the centre more around the needs of young people in the community.

The centre is always looking for new volunteers to assist with events and anyone wishing to help should contact 565132 for further information.

“The Culdrose Community Centre is the hub of the Naval community and is designed for everyone to use. It is led by the community for the community," said Naomi.
