Family and friends of six people who were awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s recent birthday honours, including Verna Triconey of Helston, attended a ceremony at County Hall in Truro to see the medals presented.

The reception was hosted by Cornwall Council chairman Ann Kerridge and saw Colonel Edward Bolitho, the Lord Lieutenant, present the medals the six recipients.

Those honoured were Verna, who received her award for services to the East Lizard Helpline and the community in Helston; Michael Gee, of St Ives, for services to rugby in the South West; Tony King, of Fowey, for services to maritime safety and Desmond Libby, of Polruan, for services to the community in Polruan.

Michael Polkinghorne-Kerris was also recognised for his service to young people through the Scout movement and Mary Snell received her award for services to physical education, having provided swimming coaching to primary schools in Cornwall for over 40 years.

The Lord Lieutenant spoke of his admiration for those receiving the award saying: “Honours are not easily won and all the recipients have given selfless service to their communities. I was delighted to be able to present the recipients with their medals in recognition of the extraordinary impact each of them has had on their communities."
