Two aircraft engineers at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose have been selected as games volunteers for the Rugby World Cup which started this weekend.

Over 10,000 people applied two years ago when the recruitment process began, and after an interview and assessment day Lorraine Osman and Guy Pallett are thrilled to have been picked. Both are keen rugby enthusiasts; Guy plays for the Mariners team and Lorraine has played for navy ladies rugby squad as well as coaching a girl’s rugby team in Helston.

They will be based in Exeter working six shifts spanning three scheduled matches. Guy will be responsible for fleet transport which will involve chauffeuring officials, VIP's and diplomats, to different venues. Although he won’t have the opportunity to watch any of the matches he says “this is a once in a lifetime opportunity; Will we ever going to have a world cup here again? I have a real passion for this and want to get involved and meet different people from all over the world who share the same passion as me.”

Whilst Guy is busy driving dignitaries between matches Lorraine will be overseeing work force operations, ensuring volunteers are in the right place at the right time. Lorraine will also be based in the Fan zone which is a free area open to the public which will be broadcasting all the games on a big screen.

Guy and Lorraine explained that their motivation in volunteering is to pass on their enthusiasm to Cornwall’s youth and get them excited about the sport. Both agreed by saying, "we would encourage anyone to apply and take part in future events; they stand as much chance as we did of getting selected. We want to pass on our passion for sport as a legacy to young people in the area.”

The first match to be played at Sandy Park is Tonga versus Namibia on 29th September.
