There was a right royal knees-up in Flushing recently as villagers got together to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II becoming the UK's longest reigning monarch.

Young and old alike were invited to join in the fun at a street party organised by Sue Yates which saw tables and chairs set out along Coventry Road and decked out with tablecloths, plates and serviettes. There were celebration cakes, sweets and soft drinks for the children, various pasties and sausage rolls for those who don't eat port, but for those that do, there was a hog roast that was large enough to cater for up to 300 people.

A glass of sparkling wine was provided for all the adults ahead of a toast to the Queen and a verse of the National Anthem, which was then followed by the much anticipated hog roast.

As well as the food, there was entertainment for the whole family including children's activities during the afternoon which was followed later by a performance by Stitched Up, whose line-up included the landlady of the Seven Stars.

The money to pay for the festivities had been raised by residents of the village through a raffles, a pub quiz, auctions and donations. A total of £1,050 was collected which enabled the street party to "go with a bang." All the villagers had to bring along was any food or drink they particularly wanted.

"A big thank you must go to Chris and Shelly, Julie and Suzie from the Seven Stars, Martin for the quiz, everyone who gave donations including a very generous donation from Stuart and Kevin of Flushing Holiday Cottages and my long standing and very patient partner Paul," said Sue.
