Coffee and cake was the order of the day around Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding area on Friday as community groups came together to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Groups from Mylor to Mawnan and Perranarworthal to Penryn organised events as part of Macmillan's Big Coffee morning, an annual, national fundraising initiative which raised more than £25million last year alone.

In Perranarworthal, the staff of the Norway Inn decided to improve on last year's efforts, and with more than 100 visitors the pub raised more than £2,000 in just two hours.

The children and staff of Mylor Bridge School also celebrated Roald Dahl Day on the same day as their coffee morning, meaning parents and friends were served by pupils in all manner of outfits inspired by the author, and the school raised £331.

In Penryn Clare Everall, who shaved her head for Macmillan earlier in the year and raised £247, held a coffee morning in the Town Hall and collected another £115 for the charity.

Mawnan Memorial Hall was buzzing with residents enjoying cakes provided by Mawnan Women's Institute and the Mawnan Wives, with £955 raised in total.

Organiser Gill Druce said: "The team of volunteers running the event were on their feet from 8.15am setting up - a big thank you to them for being there again and ensuring that the event was so successful."

Meanwhile in Mabe, an event at the Community Hall raised £481, with organiser Shirley Denyer and her husband making it up to £500, making it the best coffee morning held there so far.

And Falmouth couple Gary and Jane Wakely borrowed a marquee and coffee machines from Argal Reservoir Cafe for their coffee morning, which raised £2,100 in memory of their friend Colin Craig.
