A man has died after being pulled from the water in Penzance Harbour on Sunday afternoon.

The Penlee inshore lifeboat, police, ambulance and a rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose were sent to a report of a person face down in the water at around 1.45pm, following a call from Falmouth Coastguard.

On the arrival of the lifeboat, the casualty was quickly located in the water near the bow of an angling boat moored alongside the Albert Pier, and volunteer crewmember, Sam Kent, entered the water and swam to the casualty.

He was brought on board the boat and given CPR, before being transferred to the care of paramedics, and then airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

RNLI Penlee mechanic and inshore lifeboat helm, Tony Rendle, said: "We were on the scene very quickly this afternoon and the crew did everything within their power to save this person’s life. They both dealt with the situation in a calm, controlled and professional manner, putting all their regular RNLI training into practice. "Sadly, we have since learnt that the casualty did not make it – our thoughts are with his family."
