East Pool Mine will be welcoming renowned author and leading expert Lynne Mayers for a talk on Balmaidens on Thursday, October 8.

Balmaidens were hardy girls who once worked above ground in Cornish mines breaking and crushing the ore. This talk explores the stories of the Balmaidens and their tough back-breaking toil in the open air exposed to the elements all year round.

Presenting original historical material, Lynne Mayers will also show archive photos and original objects highlighting the significant contribution of Balmaidens to Cornish mining.

The evening will include a performance from local community choir the Red River Singers, who will sing well-known mining songs including those composed by musician and Cornish Bard Hilary Coleman based on original Balmaiden chants and poems.

Hetty Bevington, Visitor Services Officer at East Pool Mine, says: “We have put this evening together to celebrate the women of mining – the Balmaidens – who once worked above ground in Cornish mines, including here at East Pool Mine. If you’re interested in this fascinating topic, then it will be a wonderful entertaining evening.”

Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for children and are available now from East Pool Mine. To book place telephone: 01209 315027. The evening will run from 7pm to 9 pm and refreshments will be available.
