Falmouth's newest town councillor has called on residents of the Old Hill estate to join him in an "action day" this Saturday when he's hoping people will help him clear weeds and litter.

Mathew McCarthy, Lib Dem councillor for the Penwerris ward, will be rolling up his sleeves and getting down to the "perennial problem" of clearing weeds and picking litter. He is acting on the concerns of local residents who complain that Cornwall Council no longer tackle the weeds that grow on pavements and in the gutters around the area.

Mathew said: "Cornwall Council just don't have the funds to tackle the weeds on our pavement s any more so we can either just let the place get overgrown and strewn with litter, or we can roll up our sleeves and get stuck in as a community to tackle it ourselves.

"I have already received a number of phone calls from local people congratulating me on the initiative and hopefully local residents will turn out to support my team on Saturday."

Anyone wanting to get involved in Mathew's Clean Up Day should contact him at mathewmccarthy@hotmail.co.uk; call him on 07576 561 747, or simply meet him on the corner of Bowles Road with Old Hill on Saturday at 10.30am. Volunteers should come dressed for changeable weather and bring any spare portable gardening tools they may have.
