Roland's Happy Plaice in Porthleven has been fundraising all year to say "thank you" to 771 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS Culdrose.

The fish and chip shop has raised £2,010.05 which the owner Roland Lowery has donated to the search and rescue squadron’s SAR60 charity fund. The fund supports the Royal Navy and Royal Marines charities, CLIC Sargent and Children’s Hospice South West.

When asked how he had worked with the local community to raise the funds Mr Lowery said: “We kicked this year's fundraising off by hosting a fish and chips evening for £5 and we donated 100 per cent of that money to the charity. The man who supplies my potatoes donated them and so did my fish supplier. All my staff worked for free, in fact everybody rallied together. That, combined with continued fundraising throughout the year, such as organising a sponsored walk, has generated support from our customers.”

Aircraft engineer technician Matthew Gough, aircraft engineer technician Joseph Griffiths and Lieutenant Phillip Ross from 771 Squadron, called in at Roland’s Happy Plaice to accept his cheque and express their gratitude for his continued and ongoing support.

Mr Lowery explained why he regularly fundraises in support of the search and rescue squadron: “771 is an iconic squadron. People don’t realise that if they get into trouble, within a very short space of time these fellas will be there to help them and save them. They are the pride of Cornwall.”
