GWEEK Players had one of their final rehearsals at the weekend before they take to the stage for real with their autumn offering, The 39 Steps.

The West End comedy, written by Patrick Barlow, promises to be a "lovely evening full of laughs." The first performance will be at Gweek Village Hall next Wednesday, November 18, and the run will continue each night until the Saturday, although there are no tickets left for the Friday show.

"Hilarious and spectacular," the production is based, "very loosely," on Hitchcock’s film of John Buchan’s book. Described as "impossible not to enjoy" audiences will be left breathless as the dashing and debonair Hannay is chased through the Flying Scotsman, escapes over the Forth Bridge, gets his girl and hunts down a dastardly group of spies who threaten the honourable and decent citizens of Great Britain.

Audiences are invited to attend in 1935 costume and a prize will be given each night to the best outfit. Tickets, at £9/£10, include a delicious dessert in the interval. To book tickets call 0845 0948874

Gweek Players were founded in 1984 when their first production was Breath of Spring by Peter Coke. Since then they have performed two plays most years in April and November, usually comedies, such as Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit and Priestley's When We Are Married, but plenty of serious stuff too, including They Came To A City by J B Priestley, Pack of Lies by Whitemore and more recently Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads.
