Organisers of next week's Fatstock Show near Helston are keen to spread the message that the event is for everyone and not just for farmers.

The show will be held at Franchis Farm in Wendron on Monday, November 16, and provides a chance to get up close to where food comes from and see first class vegetables, cattle and sheep, view monster cabbages, perfect potatoes, excellent eggs and top quality baking.

Now in its 145th year, Fatstock is believed to be the oldest show of its kind in Cornwall. The show welcomes all local people, not just farmers, to come and celebrate all that is best in food and farming today. "You may not have cattle or corn to show, but why not enter the cookery, floral art, or photography classes?" said a spokesman. "The children’s classes are open to all children too and this year the show welcomes the children from Wendron School who are learning about farm to fork in their curriculum."

In years gone by, Helston Fatstock Show was based in the Guildhall and later, all classes went to the Helston Cattle Market. In 2001 when the Cattle Market closed it was feared that the Fatstock Show would come to an end. However, due to Bob Cowell’s kind offer of a new "home" at Franchis Farm, opposite Wheal Dream restaurant, the show has continued to thrive.
