Helston's new JD Wetherspoon's pub, The Coinage Hall, will be opening its doors on Tuesday, November 24, with the creation of 60 new jobs.

Mayor Mike Thomas will officially open the pub at 8am and Helston Town Band will perform. The company has spent £2.13 million developing the outlet, on the site of the former Oliver & Son's furniture store which traded in Coinagehall Street for almost 80 years.

The pub name refers to the Coinage Hall which stood in the middle of the thoroughfare, from the late 16th century until about 1810. Helston had been surrounded by tin mines since it became one of the five "coinage towns" designated by royal charter, in 1305. The tin mined in the area was brought to be assayed in the purpose-built Coinage Hall.

The new pub, which will be managed by Matt Washington, will be open from 8am until midnight, Sunday to Thursday, and 8am until 1am on Friday and Saturday. Food will be served throughout the day, from opening until 11pm, every day.

The Coinage Hall will specialise in real ales, as well as craft and world beers, serving a wide range of different draught ales, as well as bottled beers, including those from local and regional brewers. It will be open for family dining, with children, accompanied by an adult, welcome in the pub up until 9pm, throughout the week, and will be wheelchair accessible with a specially-adapted toilet for people with disabilities.

The new-look pub, which is set over two floors, will feature an enclosed beer garden to the rear of the ground floor, where smoking will be permitted in a designated area, as well as a non-smoking roof terrace beer garden on the first floor.

Historical photos, details of local history, information relating to events, historical buildings and characters of the area, as well as artwork by local artists will all be on display. There will also be several artworks and commissioned pieces, including an original oil on canvas by local artist Nigel Hallard, as well as memorabilia relating to the name of the pub, including bespoke coin tables and an original safe.

Manager Matt said: “Myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub and we are confident that it will be a great addition to the Helston community.”
