The parents and wider family of little William Mead, who died in his sleep at his Penryn home almost a year ago, will be gathering on Saturday to celebrate what wold have been his second birthday and to raise money in his memory.

William, who was affectionately nicknamed Grumpus by his parents Melissa and Paul, died on December 14 from sepsis which developed as a complication of pneumonia. "We had no idea what it was, we found out in the most heartbreaking way possible," said his mum.

As a way of coming to terms with their loss, Paul and Melissa are raising money for the UK Sepsis Trust. "As a family we are trying to focus and cling on to something positive, and to keep William alive in everyone’s thoughts, by creating a legacy in his name," they said.

Friday would have been William's second birthday so on Saturday Melissa and Paul will be joined by family and friends in Truro's Boscawen Park where they will be releasing biodegradable balloons "for William to play with in heaven" at 1pm.

As well remembering their son, the Meads will also be fundraising. In addition to accepting donations for balloons and a selling raffle tickets on the day, they have organised an online auction. Among the lots donated and up for grabs are signed England rugby and Everton football shirts, a PADI diving course and signed art. Bidding opened on Monday and closes at midnight next Monday, November 30. To view the lots and make a bid go to www.williamslegacy-auction.com.
