With Miss Peapods cafe and bar in Penryn being renamed the Muddy Beach and being handed over to the Dann family, Alice Marston looks back over ten years of adventure

So after nearly Ten years, miss.peapod or her alter- Ego Alice Marston, has decided to hand the baton on to another local family.

Opening up nearly a decade ago with a toddler and a baby, i couldn't resist taking on the challenge of creating the cafe space that was designed at Jubilee Wharf.

With a background in festival cafes and having had the previous experience of doing The Sugarcube Pop - up Cafe at the Drill Hall with poet and fellow vintage lover Bernie Beale and Maria Christoforidou, i felt i could handle a little cafe space in the quiet back water of Penryn.

The response to Miss Peapods has been over whelming. Possibly because i aimed it at parents at a similar stage in life as me. Which was something i understood. Maybe also because of the timing with the much mourned music venue The Pirate closing, allowed Miss Peapod to slip into a niche, waiting for her. But mostly, i think it was because of the big hearted, fun, creative people who live in Penryn and surrounding area who became my customers, audience and sometimes performers too.

Without the support of all these lovely people who made Miss Peapods what it was, I wouldn't have been in the privileged position to have employed so many locals and to have hosted so many interesting things.

A lot has happened in the intervening years, and I shall be posting more flyers that we have saved and sharing more memories on our Facebook page, but with 20 employees and a robust turnover, I don't mind admitting that I'm out of my depth now, and its time for someone to take Jubilee Wharf's cafe space to the next level that it deserves.

It's been a rip roaring adventure, I've met lots of amazing people, drunk a lot of coffee and have had as much fun in the kitchen as out front. But I'm ready to focus on my other commitments. I also work for Homestart.uk which I love and I've now got three children, so the squeeze on my time isn't very comfortable any more.

We at Jubilee Wharf, feel incredibly fortunate to have met the charming Dann family. With their admittedly much more experienced hospitality back ground and fascinating local links stretching back to Penryn's first fish and chip shop, we can't wait for Muddy Beach Cafe's opening later this month. With many of Miss Peapod's staff staying on with the new venture, the new direction will have a familiar feel.

We had our closing party on Friday night and it was a night of Cornish cream! Kicking off with Hed Love and Passman bringing their crazy brand of Cornish Hip-Hop humour, followed by the mighty Eyelids. These girls were also one of the first bands to play Peapods and we have had five children between us during the interim, so it was fitting to end my journey with them. Back Beat Sound System rounded things off with an epic set, valiantly squeezing themselves and various hair arrangements into my small space.

I would like to thank Carey Davies for saving the day (again!) with his technical support and Simon Davies for doing another legendary turn at the graphic equalizer, bring top quality sound and helming our final night. The venue wouldn't have been the same without either of these two beautiful people. Thank you to, to the Packet for their listings and reviews, we appreciated the support of our local paper.

And finally to all my staff, old and new, who have worked so hard for me, and made me laugh even harder. It was like having my own bunch of pirates! its been a pleasure working with you all. Thank you.
