Proceeds from the sale of two paintings will directly support Newlyn Art Gallery’s exhibition and

learning programmes.

In 1994, Terry Frost made a donation box for the gallery that incorporated a circular painting, Spring Spiral. The box served for several years in the gallery, spinning with every donation. The painting more recently featured as the gallery’s Christmas card in celebration of the Terry Frost centenary exhibition presented across both its venues this autumn and winter.

Spiral Spring will continue to support the work of the gallery through its sale. Terry’s son, Anthony Frost is delighted that the sale, in the spirit of the original gift, will contribute to the gallery’s future. The money raised will support the gallery’s education programme, including offering creative opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and those building a career in the arts. Terry’s knighthood was for his services to art and art education, and the nature of the support his painting will make is considered entirely appropriate.

As well as Spring Spiral, a second painting, Blacksmith Shop and Bridge, by Newlyn School painter Harold Harvey will also be sold. It depicts the lower bridge at Newlyn and was painted in 1941, the final year of Harvey’s life. It was bequeathed to the gallery in 2015 by Mrs Waters from Newlyn.

These two generous gifts will be auctioned by David Lay at Penzance Auction House in the fine art sale on January 28.
