Social landlord Coastline Housing has completed a small development of nine homes at Pednandrea Yard in Redruth.

The development, near the town’s railway station, had previously housed some storage sheds and its fair share of general rubble and rubbish.

Thanks to funding from the Homes and Communities Agency which was specifically set aside for regeneration in Redruth, the yard is now home to six apartments for older people and three houses.

Matt Ward, head of development at Coastline Housing, said: “This brownfield site in the middle of Redruth had become quite run down and had started to attract an element of fly-tipping. We were delighted to be given the opportunity to redevelop it and build more much-needed housing for local people.”

The properties were allocated to new residents last month. The name of the yard no doubt has a connection to the nearby Pednandrea Mine which produced copper and tin between 1707 (maybe even earlier) and 1891.

Matt added: “When we purchased this site it was named Pednandrea Yard so we were keen to preserve the local history connected with this name when we developed the new homes. The properties will be known as Garth Pednandrea – garth meaning ‘small enclosure’ or ‘courtyard’ in Cornish.”
