RNAS Culdrose at Helston has recorded gusts of more than 70mph this morning - strong enough to class as hurricane level.
Duty forecaster Wendy Wheatley told the Packet: "The biggest gusts are always under the showers.
"Our primary role is to make sure there is safe aviation taking place at Culdrose at all times."
All flying has been cancelled at the naval base today and there is a ban on opening hangar doors, as they are only able to withstand winds of 25 knots; the highest gust today has been 63 knots.
However, Ms Wheatley said things were expected to calm down at 6pm today and although it would still be "very windy," it was dropping to 20-25 knots, with gusts of 50 knots (55mph).
Tonight will see winds die down even further, although tomorrow could see a new weather front bringing rain and low-level cloud during the morning.
