A Helston-based coffee company has decided not continue with a plan to move its roastery and cafe into a proposed new development at Porthleven.

Opinion was divided last October over the proposal to create a three storey cafe and new headquarters facing the harbour for Origin Coffee Roasters, with a roasting facility and parking space in the old ship yard behind.

The firm, which is currently based at the Water-Ma-Trout industrial estate, with a cafe in Porthleven, was working with Porthleven Harbour and Dock Company, which would have carried out the development work and then leased the building to Origin.

Views were split, with some believing it would raise the profile of the area while others were fearful of the perceived smell of roasting coffee beans.

On Monday Origin announced that, as a result of the consultation, it had decided not to pursue the tenancy of the proposed Harbour Head development.

Tom Sobey, owner of Origin, said: "The proposed roastery move was intended to be a positive one for both Origin and the local area, so in light of some of the feedback received we felt that it was no longer the right one.

"We would, however, like to pass on our thanks to everyone who was so supportive of us and wish the Harbour & Dock Company all the best with their application for the development."

Origin are now getting ready to reopen The Brew House, which they are renaming, in March.

It is not known if the Harbour & Dock Company plan to continue with the development proposal. No one from the company was available to comment as the Packet went to press.
