Parking along the only road in and out of Falmouth's Goldenbank estate could lead to a serious accident which would leave over 2,000 occupants, and the emergency services, unable to enter or leave and lead to huge tailbacks, according to one group of residents.

The group are trying to drum up support for their plea for double yellow lines to be installed along the entire length of Treveglos Road. Some attended Falmouth Town Council's surgery on Friday when they were told the lines would not be possible any time soon as there was no money available.

Resident Paul Hodge said: "It is a safety issue. Last weekend there were seven cars parked along there and cars were coming out of Treverbyn Road, getting out into the middle of the road and then having to reverse back in.

"At the bottom near the roundabout there's a blind spot and when they park down there cars have to go on the wrong side of the road. If a car then comes around and there's a serious accident the police would then have to block the road off."

If this should happen, it is claimed that, when the estate is fully built, it would leave around 3,000 residents unable to get to their homes or leave the estate. If access was blocked, it would also lead to a trail of vehicles leading back up Bickland Water Road and down towards Swanpool and Maenporth.

"The planners have made this by making this the only route into the estate," said Mr Hodge. "It should have been designated as an emergency route with no parking."

Fellow resident John Roberts added: "There are no houses along here (Treveglos Road) that have direct access to this piece of road so there is no reason for cars to be parked there. Some of those that are parked here are for sale, so the road is being used as advertising space."

The residents have enlisted the help of local town and county councillor Alan Jewell who believes he may be able to help, but not straight away. "I can see their point and I would like to do it (put down yellow lines) and it maybe that we can do something next year," he said.

"As ward members, we have money allocated by the town council for yellow line projects and next year we might be able to put this one through. It is believed that this is one of the biggest estates this side of Bristol with only one access road. In the meantime, I would urge all those concerned to take part in the current parking survey (being carried out by Cornwall Council)."
