Pupils at St Mary's School in Falmouth have been celebrating their sporting successes as both the swimming squad and the basketball team excelled themselves.

The school had two teams representing it at the area swimming finals held at Carn Brea recently. The year six girls, May, India, Anya, Katie ad Erin; and year five girls, Sophie, Olivia, Nikola and Imogen had won their place at the finals by qualifying in the Falmouth/Penryn swimming gala.

Competing against teams from Penryn, Pool, Redruth and Truro at Carn Brea, the year six girls came in first place overall and the year five girls took second place overall. Both teams will now represent the school at the Cornwall Games in Penzance in June.

The basketball squad, made up of boys and girls from years five and six - Tom, Anya, Imogen, Neo, Erin, Billy, Jack and Abi - have also qualified for the Cornwall Games after winning ten games out of ten in the Falmouth and Penryn B League. The school's netball team is also through to the area finals.

"This is a massive achievement for a relatively small school," said teaching assistant Karen Higham. "We are doing very well this year, sports wise. The children are all very keen and we are very interested in sport, we think it is very important, as a school.

"We do encourage the children to all try something and to fund out what their sport is, whether it's swimming, basketball, football or netball."
