A primary school at Porkellis that was judged as "needing improvement" three years ago has turned its prospects around in the latest inspection by Ofsted.

Inspectors judged Halwin School to now be "good" in all areas, prompting celebrations from pupils, staff and governors.

Headteacher Vicky Sanderson, who joined the school in September 2014, said: "I am so very proud of the hard work, dedication and drive of both staff and governors.

"Over the last 16 months we have worked hard to ensure that we keep the very best interests of our children at the heart of what we do at Halwin.

“It is fantastic to have the significant improvements we have made recognised and praised by Ofsted.

Pupils at Halwin mainly come from the surrounding villages of Porkellis, Carnkie and Penmarth.

Improvements that have taken place over the last 16 months include the school receiving a National Lottery grant to install an outdoor music area and a grant from The Belling Trust to update all of the school's IT equipment.

The school has also received "significant" financial support from the local community and parents, to install a new adventure playground.

Further improvements include building work taking place over the next few weeks to update the outside of the school, with new indoor facilities being installed during the summer, together with the development of an outside classroom.

Chair of governors Dr Loveday Jenkin said: "We are delighted with Ofsted's findings. Everyone involved with the school has worked very hard in providing the high quality teaching and learning provision that is now in place - which is evident from the 20 per cent increase in SATs results which we achieved last year.

“We would like to thank our colleagues from the Southerly Point Cooperative Educational Trust for all of their help and support, and we look forward to continuing to provide the very best opportunities for our children and families."

The report, published on Monday, states that to improve further pupils need to be clear about what they need to understand and do in every lesson, and to take responsibility for making their work as good as it can be.
