A new link with a local charity has led to two Cornish students receiving sought-after job offers.

Patrick Fayle, from Penzance, and Robert Arundell, from Truro, were both offered summer employment at outdoor activity charity BF Adventure, near Penryn, following a skills link between the organisation and the outdoor education foundation degree programme at Truro and Penwith College.

Using the facilities at BF Adventure, the outdoor education students are benefitting from sharing the experience of the charity’s employees, while familiarising themselves with the running of an activity centre.

The organisation held an interview day for the students, which saw the group participate in various tasks including the temple run, where four poles and six barrels are carried through the run, demonstrating logical and progressive thinking, dynamic problem solving, physical testing, patience and perseverance.

Following the interview day, the students received feedback from the outdoor adventure professionals on their performance. First years Patrick and Robert stood out with their problem solving abilities and teamwork skills, resulting in their gaining employment from the day.

Drew Pilley, programme leader, said: “Creating links with companies such as Bishops Forum give such a fantastic opportunity for the students as not only does it give hands on experience of the real world and the operations within an outdoor centre, it also gives a clear avenue for potential employment which is essential for young students to widen their experience to develop their careers further.

“I would like to express my thanks to Tony Baker, centre manager for Bishops Forum Adventure centre for his input, involvement and creating these valuable opportunities for our students.”
