Families from Helston were able to find out more about the work of the town council through a special visit.

The town’s mayor Mike Thomas had been asked by the Lizard Child Trust if the council could host an event, as many people were unaware of what members did.

As a result, nine adults and 21 children spent three hours hearing about the work of councillors and taking part in activities at a “family engagement day.”

After being greeted with refreshments, the group was given a brief overview of the role of the council within the town, with information from the mayor, town clerk Chris Dawson and councillors, including the chairs of the various committees.

Afterwards there was a chance for the visitors to get involved themselves, by taking part in a short quiz.

There was just enough time to see the mayor’s historic chain, before a half-hour lunch.

Following this the visitors were able to look around the Guildhall building, hearing about its history.

The event ended with the families being able to ask questions about the town council and discuss issues with the town that they wanted to raise.

There was also the chance for the mayor to see artwork created by the children the previous day, in a competition run by the Lizard Child Trust, to design a new mayor's chain.

Speaking after the event, Mr Thomas said: “I’d like to thank all the people who took part in the family engagement event. It was wonderful to see so many young people enjoying themselves.”
