The Helford River Association, which this year celebrates 50 years of activity since its founding, has appointed Mrs Georgie Higgs as a new executive director.

The HRA is registered charity whose objectives are to improve, protect and preserve for the benefit of the public, the Helford river, its estuary and the adjoining land and neighbouring countryside. With almost 200 members, it plays an effective role as a watchdog over attempts to commercialise or overdevelop the natural amenities of the area.

Georgie, who was a former Kerrier District councillor, non-executive director of Coastline Housing and a legal advocate, took up the post at the beginning of last month. Her appointment coincidences with the Helford River Association’s half century anniversary for which, members will be presenting an exhibition of the association's history and achievements in venues around the Helford.

Georgie is already working closely with Cornwall Council and organisations affiliated with the HRA in the continuing effort to safeguard the exceptional qualities of the Helford River.

HRA chairman Mel Jackson said: “Georgie’s experience and skills will be an invaluable asset to the

organisation and we look forward to a positive future in terms of protecting this unique area."
