A new foodbank has opened in St Keverne to address the "ever growing need" of people struggling to even eat.

It is the third to be set up by the team at Helston and Lizard Foodbank, which is overseen and run by the Helston charity Mustard Seed.

The food bank, which will run weekly out of the St Keverne Methodist Hall, was officially launched on Monday by the Rev Steve Swann.

Ruth McGurk, foodbank co-ordinator, said that in this financial year the Helston and The Lizard Foodbank had helped to feed 145 people in the St Keverne and Meneage parishes alone.

She added: β€œIt is difficult for people on low income to get into Helston to collect food. Consequently, we have opened this station along with the one in Mullion, in October 2014, to give the people we serve easier access when they find themselves in food poverty.”

To receive food a person must have been referred there by a person in authority, such as a doctor, vicar or police officer.

A total of 14 volunteers have signed up to man the foodbank, which will be open every Monday between 9am and 10.30pm.

There is also a bank run from Mullion Methodist Church each Friday, between 10am and noon, with the main base in Wendron Street, at the Open Door Cafe.
