The first ever craft and produce show to be put on by Helston Methodist Church received huge support from the local community.

There were 963 entries entered by 123 exhibitors who came from as far afield as Marazion and Mullion, as well as Helston, Porthleven and Trewennack.

Flowers, cookery, photographs, handicrafts and items made by children were all laid out in the main chapel upstairs, while refreshments were served downstairs in the Wesley Hall.

Rev Danny Reed, Methodist minister and one of the organising committee, said: "I'm absolutely delighted, it was much better than I imagined.

"We had a lot of positive comments from the judges about the standard of entries. There were good entries across the board, with certificates awarded for first to fourth place and for best in section."

The original idea was to hold a show as a fundraising event for the Lizard and Mounts Bay Methodist Circuit, which developed into an event open to anyone from the local community.

Many of the entries were auctioned off at the end of the day, raising £700 for the Methodist circuit.

The day proved so successful that it is likely to be held again next year, in the spring once again so as not to clash with any other similar events in the town such as the Harvest Fair and Fatstock Show.

Rev Danny thanked everyone who helped, setting up on the day and getting the chapel back in order ready for the Sunday service the next morning.

He also thanked all the judges: Dawn Boyd, Roy Billingham and Bill Reed for handicraft, Gillian Lawrence for cookery, Nigel Pascoe for horticulture, David Harris for eggs, Martin Matthews for the Christmas message class, Jackie Allen for the children's section and Keith Richards for photography.
