They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this proved particularly true for one Mullion mum who raised £1,300 by the end of her's last Friday.

This was no ordinary breakfast, however, but a fundraising event to fund Katie Gilbert's third London Marathon run in aid of children's charity Barnardo's.

Katie, who lives in the village with her husband and two sons, is a specialist nurse for children in care, working in West Cornwall with youngsters in foster placements.

From 7am last Friday she and her team of helpers, including her mum and dad Dennis and Marie Carslake together with many friends and relatives, served full breakfasts or baps to those in a rush, from Mullion Chapel schoolroom.

Coffee and cake were also served throughout ay, and there was a raffle and cake sale in aid of chapel funds.

Katie's dad Dennis said: "It was absolutely brilliant. The community support was unbelievable again."

Over the course of the day a total of 230 breakfasts were served in various forms, including to two classes from Mullion Primary School who walked up to give their support.

The village's secondary school also got involved by holding a non-uniform day and cake sale to add to Katie's fundraising pot.

Dennis thanked Scorse Foods, RJ Trevarthen, Colin Carter, Sainsbury's and Tesco for contributing food for the breakfasts sold.

He also thanked Rowland's Happy Plaice at Porthleven, Pure Bliss and The Galleon fish and chip restaurant in the village, Poldhu Beach Cafe, Trenance Chocolate, Mullion Cove Hotel, Polurrian Bay Hotel, the Mount's Bay Inn and a local artist called Tracy, who all donated prizes for the raffle.

"Thank you to anyone who helped during the course of the day and the two schools for supporting it," he added. "We had a lot of help from local people and lots of friends. We wouldn't be able to do it without them."

He made particular mention to Louise Martin, who did the majority of the cooking on the day.
