For most people a walk around Loe Bar, across the National Trust Penrose estate, and on into Porthleven would be a leisurely stroll, but for ShelterBox fundraisers Wanda Summers and Jamie Giddens it was a test of endurance over 24 hours "behind bars."

Wanda, endurance runner, multi-marathon superstar and Olympic trainer, always surprises with the exhausting challenges she sets herself to raise funds for ShelterBox. In 2010 she made a 155 mile trek across the Gobi Desert, and later took part in the Ocean Floor Race over Egypt’s White Desert. In 2014 she ran up and down Praa Sands beach steps continually for a whole day and night.

Now Wanda, and her running colleague Jamie, have just completed 75 and 81 miles respectively, over a nine mile circular course around Loe Bar, across the Penrose estate, and into Porthleven. Wanda and Jamie completed the equivalent of around three marathons each, non-stop for 24 hours from 8am on April 8 to 8am on April 9 – an impressive "24 hours behind (Loe) bars," as they put it.

Not only did they succeed in completing the gruelling day and night run, but they exceeded their fundraising target, having already collected £550 for ShelterBox, almost enough to sponsor a complete ShelterBox for a family affected by disaster or conflict.

Wanda said: ‘It all came together I am so pleased to say. Jamie, who I roped into doing it too, has never done anything as long as this before, so was a really exciting challenge for him. Jamie has trained so hard for this, I am so proud of him. The weather started off sunny and cold, and Jamie and I were like giggling kids with excitement about it."

Wanda looped the circuit in an anti-clockwise direction, and Jamie ran it clockwise. "It meant we got to give a ‘high five’ every time we passed each other, which was enough to make onlookers stare and wonder what was going on, until they spotted our ShelterBox vests," said Wanda. "Jamie completed 81 miles and I did 75. I walked some due to the absolutely zero training for this event. All in all it was an incredible time.’

Wanda is already planning for next year. "We plan now to make '24 Hours Behind Bars' an annual race open to everyone, with a percentage of the race entry free going to ShelterBox."

Wanda’s achievements are all the more remarkable because only eight years ago a paragliding accident left her in a wheelchair with a broken back. Home therapy and sheer determination soon saw her back on the endurance race circuit again.

On their 24 hour circuit Wanda and Jamie, who both live in Porthleven, received drinks, other sustenance and encouragement from local businesses Nauti But Ice and the Twisted Currant Café.
