Falmouth School's plans to create enhanced sporting facilities, including a new all-weather pitch, are to come under scrutiny at a public meeting which has been called by Cornwall Council.

The proposals, which also include a new sports pavilion and extra grass sports pitches on the site of the former Budock Hospital along with a new access and parking, are being opposed by residents living opposite in Trescobeas Road who fear the new 3G pitch with its floodlights and extended playing hours, will prove unneighbourly.

The application, though, has received support from many people from across the town who have individually forwarded the same letter of support to Cornwall Council.

Falmouth Town Council's planning committee had originally recommended the application be refused by Cornwall Council, but after hearing from the school a second time, it changed its view on the casting vote of the chairman.

The application will be determined by Cornwall Council but not before the public meeting which is to be held at Falmouth Cricket Club at 6pm on Wednesday, May 11. Anyone who attends who wishes to make their views known to the central sub-area planning committee, will be asked to register on arrival and will then be called upon to speak.

A spokesman for the council said: "The public meeting provides an opportunity for councillors to listen to the views of local people. Please note no decision will be taken at the public meeting."

The planning application will then be considered and debated in full by councillors at New County Hall in Truro with that meeting due to take place on Monday, June 6. Full details of the application can be found by searching for planning application PA16/00703 on cornwall.gov.uk.
