A little bit of India came to St Mary's Church Hall on Friday at a fundraiser to help children in Tamil Nadu.

As well as the usual coffee and cake, visitors to the hall were able to buy goods bought back from India by volunteers and see a video and learn about the work of children's charity The Kanji Project.

The event was being held to raise money for the charity - which since 1992 has built a 1,250 place school and a 350 place kindergarten in the village of Kanji - to fund a care centre for children with educational and physical difficulties.

Organiser Ian Parr, a former trustee of the charity and the event organiser, said: "The first school in Kanji was a mud hut with space for ten children.

"Now the charity has built a school for 1,250 children between six and sixteen."

He added: "We're also helping the poor villagers in India. The church in the last couple of years has funded some wells to be built over there."

The event raised a total of £374, which should be enough to run the centre for a month.
