Falmouth Art Gallery is one of only four venues in the UK to be displaying the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition which can be seen until June 4 June.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK, attracting over 3,000 submissions in 2015. The exhibition showcases the work of drawing practitioners, from students to established artists, and highlights the importance of drawing in creative practice.

The exhibition fills all three galleries and features the top 60 entries for the 2015 prize, selected by the expert panel of artist Dexter Dalwood; Salima Hashmi, curator and writer; and John-Paul Stonard, art historian. The first prize was awarded to Tom Harrison for his delicate pencil drawing entitled From Andrew’s Flat, Singapore. The second prize was awarded to Elisa Alaluusua for her seven-minute video, Unconditional Line.

Among those at Friday's opening of the exhibition was Falmouth-born Virginia Verran, winner of the Jerwood Drawing prize in 2010. She studied at Falmouth School of Art before leaving to continue studying art in Winchester and then London where she has lived since the early eighties. She has taught at Falmouth University for many years, travelling to and from London where she has a studio in Bethnal Green.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of free talks and events. For families there is a "drawing with forfeits" workshop on Saturday, May 7; "drawing with all things messy" on June 2; a doodling to

music workshop on June 3 and a mono-printing workshop on June 4. These free artist-led sessions will run from 11am–3 pm.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is a joint initiative, led by Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of Bath School of Art and Design at Bath Spa University, and supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation through its contemporary gallery programme Jerwood Visual Art.
