Mango's bar in Falmouth has closed with immediate effect after fighting a losing battle over "totally unfair" noise complaints.

Owner Dave Deans told the Packet that the threat of a £20,000 fine, coupled with unclear guidelines over how loud the club could be, led to his decision to shut down the bar.

He said: "It's a well run club but this guy's got a bee in his bonnet and it seems it's going on, and on, and on."

Mr Deans said the complaints started after a property in the streets behind the club was bought and the new resident started making complaints about the noise.

At a meeting in October, he claims an environmental health inspector told him that the club was too loud, but would not tell him what volume would be acceptable.

The club even bought sound monitors to measure the decibel levels outside.

He said: "It seems totally unfair. It's a big investment lost.

"Can you imagine... you're threatened with court, you ask for an idea of the decibels and they say 'no, it's a personal opinion.' You can't battle on that.

"We've got Club I next door. They [the resident] were complaining some times when we were shut.

"Discretion being the better part of valour, we decided it was time to close."

"We were there five or six years, we've not just gone in there. The club was built under the eye of the council, they approved it."

In an announcement on its Facebook page, the club said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances Mango's will be closing permanently.

"I would like to thank all of the staff, the people we work with and the customers for making Mango's what it was."

There was outcry online at the news. Jacob Harrell wrote on Facebook: "This has ripped me to shreds. Every word of this status is a knife to the heart."

Meanwhile Holly Boxall said: "Noooooo! What is even the point of living in Cornwall now? Mangos is the only place with decent music!"

One Twitter user, Jos Harris, may have overreacted slighty, commenting: "Mangos shutting down could be the worst thing to happen to Falmouth since WW2."
