Penryn will host an artistic spectacle on October 8 as part of Penryn 800, the year-long celebration of the town's 800th anniversary.

The event called Kemeneth - Cornish for Community - will include an opera on a sailing ship, trading market, and even abseiling dancers on the town's iconic clock tower.

Organisers have said they are planning a procession of more than 20 giant puppets, bands, and dancers up through the town past the Cornish stage and stalls in the Memorial Gardens and on to the heritage stage and market in the town centre.

They have promised music, heritage stalls and performances including a high wire performance and an abseil dance down the clock tower itself, as a way of celebrating Penryn's granite industry.

The procession will then dance its way to Glasney College field where a big top stage and surrounding side shows will provide celebration and cultural activities on the theme of the Ordinalia, the mystery plays written in Cornish as Glasney College in the middle ages.

The organisers are also inviting artists, performers, stall holders and craftspeople to propose work, and there will be projects all summer making giant puppets, hobby horses, hats and training in processional music and performance.

Another event for the Penryn 800 celebrations will be a son et lumiere light production for which the town council is seeking a local artist.

Penryn Town Council and display organisers Luxmuralis are seeking an artist who can visit schools and groups to develop interest in the plans and get more people involved.

Any artists interested in the role, which includes workshop fees of £1,600 for 16 three-hour sessions, should contact peter@luxmuralis.com by 28 May.
