Swashbuckling shipmates will be clambering aboard Flushing's new pirate ship park for the first time this Saturday.

A pirate-themed fun day for all the family is taking place to launch the new adventure play area when visitors are invited to look the part in their own pirate selfie, enjoy a game of skittles, and throw sponges at Flushing School's headteacher Mark French who's been captured and locked in the village stocks.

The event is being supported by Flushing Arts Week, which takes place in the village throughout the week. Volunteers will be helping visitors to make individual ceramic tiles which may be incorporated into the planned new pavilion building.

Nearby parents can relax with a beer, courtesy of Skinners Brewery, wine or Pimms from the licensed bar or grab a hot dog from the fundraising barbecue. Proper Pancakes will be offering a pirate themed pancake on their menu, and Wild-Fired Food will be serving up wood-fired pizzas. Venezuelen folk singer Juan Gaterol and The Beautiful Diagrams will be providing live music.

The fun starts at 3pm, with a ribbon cutting at 4pm. Refreshments and entertainment will be available throughout the afternoon and evening until 8pm. Pirate fancy dress is encouraged, but landlubbers are also welcome.

Money raised on the day will go towards further improvements at the Bowling Green which includes landscaping features, the new pavilion building, plus new fencing which is being designed in collaboration with students of sustainable product design at Falmouth University.

The new play area received £85,000 from SITA Cornwall Trust, with more cash coming from fundraising events and village benefactors.
