Record turnout for the St Ives Bay 10k race

This year the race was sponsored by fresh-cornish-fish.co.uk ,the triathlon store in Hayle and Hayle Town Council with the support of Hayle Surf Life Saving Club who provided the headquarters for the race.

The race started on the beach below the Surf Life Saving Club and takes the runners nearly three miles towards Godrevy before circling around Strap rocks and going up the steps and along the side of Gwithian carpark and then running along Towans tracks and tackling a steep dune before returning to the beach for the final 1.2 miles to the finish.

In previous years the race has averaged about 80 runners but this year, with the race's reputation growing, the weather fantastic and being held in half term, places were in strong demand with over 80% of places filled by pre entries.

Nearly 170 runners, some even in pirate outfits took off down the beach through patches of energy sapping soft sand and gradually spread out before the steps.

By the time the competitors returned to the beach Oli Beale of Westbury Harriers edged ahead of Dave Bartlett of Newquay Road Runners with Marc Smerdon in third. 15-year-old Floyd Ratcliffe was the first Hayle Runner home in seventh place.

Issy Steele held a strong lead from Rachel Porte of Hayle Runners by the time they returned to the beach with Louise Harman of Barrow Runners finishing in third place.

Hayle Runners Chairman Andy Moore was grateful to all of the helpers who helped ensure no-one strayed off the route and that the race went smoothly."We coped very well with the larger number of entries and the feedback for the race has been very good.I am sure many will return to run it again next year," he said.
