Vandals armed with coloured paints have targeted a 'concrete-carbuncle' sign at the entrance to Falmouth University's Woodlane Campus.
Pictures taken on Friday morning show the 1.2 metre high concrete letters, which were unveiled by the university to mixed reactions in December last year, with paint on them following the line of the letters.
There appears to be some confusion over whether the graffiti was the work of locals or students, intended as a protest against the university or an attempt at art.
On Facebook, Jonathan Nelson wrote: "Looks like we have a artist. Looks like they put some effort into it as well."
Phill Rashleigh wrote: "Being near the art college I thought it was sort of intentional artistic highlighting when I saw it over the weekend."
And Mark peters added: "This graffiti could have been the work of childish vandals/ drunken yobs."
Devon and Cornwall Police said they had not had any reports of vandalism in Woodlane made on Thursday or Friday.
The university's head of communications has yet to respond to the Packet's requests for information.
