Firefighters are more used to killing flames than helping welcome new life but this was exactly the job of the co-responders in St Keverne yesterday.
The medically trained firefighters from St Keverne Community Fire Station, who can be sent out as a first response to emergencies when paramedics are some distance away, helped a mum who had reached the advanced stages of labour while still at home.
They were called to the Penmenner Estate in St Keverne just before 9.20am after the mother realised she was not going to make it to the hospital in time.
The crew successfully helped with the birth of a baby girl, before remaining with the family until an ambulance and midwife had arrived.
