A delegation from Germany was treated to the best Cornwall has to offer when they visited their twinning counterparts in Falmouth for a week.

The group from Falmouth’s twinned community of Landkreis-Rotenburg Wumme were welcomed at Falmouth Docks Station by the Mayor of Falmouth, Grenville Chappel, and his wife June, along with members of the Twinning Association waving flags and the newly appointed town crier Gemma Garwood.

The delegation spent five sunny days in Cornwall, where they enjoyed a boat trip and a visit to Trelissick Gardens, saw St Ives, visited Charlestown and the St Austell Brewery, and had a tour of Pendennis Castle.

During the evenings there was a buffet at the Flushing Sailing Club with music from Falmouth Twinning Association’s newest member, Viv Robertson, and a donkey-derby night at the Athenaeum Club.

The official reception was held on Tuesday at a packed Penmorvah Manor Hotel, where the town was represented by the deputy mayor Trish Minson.

After a meal and speeches, the FTA entertained its guests by attempting to sing Where Have all the Flowers Gone? in German, accompanied on guitar by Len Hatcher, which was reported to have almost worked. Len then continued the entertainment with a selection of Cornish folk songs and shanties.

Peter Downie, chairman of the FTA, said: "With a packed and varied programme, and the glorious sunshine, this was a very enjoyable exchange visit and members are already planning our reciprocal visit to Rotenburg next spring.

"Before that, however, comes a visit to our French twinned town Douarnenez in September."
