Firefighters from across Cornwall spent four and a half hours battling a large fire at a commercial warehouse near Truro yesterday evening.

Crews were Truro, Tolvaddon and Falmouth were initially called, just after 8pm, after flames and smoke were seen coming from the building in the Chacewater area.

The warehouse was described as a “single storey building, measuring approximately 30 metres by 10 metres” that is used for storage.

Due to the extent of the fire the crews at the scene called for backup at 8.30pm, in the form of a water carrier from Helston and more appliances from Truro and Perranporth.

By 9.30pm four jets were being used in a bid to quench the flames and a team from St Dennis was on its way.

An hour later the crews were still fighting the flames, although a spokesman for the fire service said that “good progress” was being made.

At 11.30pm the worst of the fire was out, although the firefighters remained on site damping down the area, while a JCB was brought in to make the building safe by removing debris.

Come 12.30am today the fire was completely out and crews were left turning over the remains and finishing damping down, with some firefighters returning to their stations soon afterwards.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
