A Falmouth-based young woman raised over a thousand pounds for the Alzheimer’s Society by holding a tea and cake afternoon.

Chloe Buckingham was motivated to hold the fundraising event because her nan, Susan Harris, aged 71, was diagnosed with dementia three years ago. Chloe raised £1,632.15 by inviting friends and family from across the town to enjoy tea and a range of homemade cakes. Raffle prizes were donated by many Falmouth businesses and Chloe would like to thank everyone who donated, helped and attended on the day.

She said: “Doing this fundraiser was a big achievement for me. Watching this cruel illness take away someone you love bit by bit is heart-breaking. To bring family and friends together to raise money and awareness was emotional but something I felt needed to be done.

"My nan is a much loved lady in Falmouth town but I had no idea how many people would come forward with donations and support. When we calculated how much we raised I was extremely overwhelmed and amazed. I couldn't be happier to know the money is going to this well needed charity."

Chloe presented the charity with a cheque for the money raised. Alzheimer’s Society community fundraiser for Cornwall, Dania Shaw, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to have met Chloe and to hear all about the wonderful event she organised. I want to say a big thank you Chloe and everyone who donated on the day. The money raised will help to provide services for people living with the disease.”

Chloe is now planning to volunteer for the charity, which will be looking for more local volunteers later in the year. Anyone interested in holding a fundraising event or volunteering please contact Dania Shaw at dania.shaw@alzheimers.org.uk.
