Cornwall can look forward to even greater sporting triumphs if the quality of winners at a recent award ceremony is anything to go by.

Golf, badminton and rugby were just three of the sports in which Truro College students excelled in the past 12 months; often by winning national competitions or representing their county and country.

Held last Friday evening at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth, students were honoured at the Sport and Public Services Celebration evening. College director of studies, Cheryl Mewton, and former student and English international golf player, Harry Hall, presented awards, while programme team leader, Emma Seward-Adams, praised the incredible achievements of the students.

“It’s fantastic to be able to come together and celebrate and reward the exceptional talent we have at Truro College,” she said. “The students have taken great pride in their work and sporting progress, and consequently the standard of work and achievement has been excellent.”

Badminton won the highly contested Team of the Year award, on the back of a remarkable season.

Not only were they AoC National Cup winners, the second time in three years, they won the AoC Ladies Doubles Gold, AoC Men’s Singles Silver and placed fourth in the AoC Men’s Doubles.

They also had members representing the county senior team as well as the County U21 team.

Kate Skuse was crowned Sports Person of the Year, winning for not only her sporting achievements in netball and basketball, but also showing commitment to her studies.

Student of the Year was Emily Toy for being the “overall ‘package’”, a second year student who combined academic studies with representing the college at golf and going the extra mile to help others. She was also selected to represent England and was part of the lady’s team that won the ISGA National Ladies Golf Junior Open.

Ms Seward-Adams also gave special mention to the efforts of the tutors. “The team has worked exceptionally hard all year to enable these achievements and this year we finally had our chance to demonstrate what we do to the rest of the country through the Ofsted visit in February,” she said.

“Every member of staff was a credit to the department and the work and support they have shown each other has been fantastic. Everyone here should be justly proud to be a part of Truro and Penwith College and especially the sports team.”

Sports at Truro and Penwith College has seen new additions to its courses and activities recently, including two new higher education programmes validated by the University of Plymouth, and a headline grabbing association with Chelsea FC Foundation.

The Health, Wellbeing and Sport (HWS) team has also organised 60 free activities a week, while the 14 College Academies boast more than 550 participants.
