UPDATE: Traffic reports state that the tree has now been cleared and the road has been reopened.

UPDATE: Police have said the road is likely to be closed for most of the day.

A statement on the Falmouth and Helston Police Facebook page read: "Due to the size of the tree the road will likely be closed for the majority of the day while clearing. Please find alternative routes remembering the most popular ones will already be very busy."

Elaine Jill Tangye commented: "Don't even think about coming through Perranwell - it's grid locked on School Hill and St Pirans Hill is closed for resurfacing."

ORIGINAL: A fallen tree has caused rush hour traffic chaos on the A39 this morning after the road was closed both ways through Perranarworthal.

The tree had crashed down to the road near the Cosawes turning at Stickenbridge which led to police closing the road between the Treluswell roundabout and Greenbank Road near Devoran.

Officers have been directing motorists, but traffic was soon queued back up the Carnon Downs bypass towards Truro and back into Penryn.
