Last week Falmouth's mayor, Grenville Chappel, called on people to help keep the town's streets litter free by getting their hands dirty and among the first to answer his plea was his wife, June, and two of her friends.

June and pals Jenny Selwood and Joy Wann, gave up six hours of their day to scour the back lanes and streets of the Old Hill area to rid them of rubbish. By mid-afternoon the trio had collected ten bin bags full of discarded wrappers and other waste, including a radiator retrieved from the lane leading down to Dracaena Gardens.

The trio tackled all the back lanes between the main roads of Old Hill as well as Glasney and Godolphin Roads. "We have had several complaints about the state of the back lanes because the council does not clean them any more," said Mr Chappel. "So they wanted to make a difference and do it themselves."
