A Truro company held its own answer to the Olympics recently with a series of fun sports and activities to raise money to fight cancer.

The BT Customer Contact Centre in Calenick Street hosted its annual community fete and raised £679 For Macmillan Cancer Research.

Volunteers from the call centre team gave up their time to host the fete to support Macmillan, a charity that was chosen by the advisors on-site following a staff vote.

Throughout the day the community minded volunteers arranged a series of Olympic style activities to put employees and visitors through their paces, such as a ping pong challenge, putting challenge and extreme hook a duck, as well as taking part in a series of challenges and an opportunity to take a break from the excitement with a lovely cream tea.

One employee, James Hocking, 28, showed his commitment to the charity by completing a sponsored 5k run, supported by Anytime Fitness, which raised £300.

He said: “It was a real challenge for me but it was great to be able to do in order to raise money for such a great charity.”

Team manager Dave Christophers said: “It was such a great event to run and it was really fantastic to see so many people coming along. Here at BT we are really committed to supporting the local community and we were really pleased that our employees voted to support Macmillan and that we were able to raise a fantastic amount of money for the charity”.

The call centre staff will be continuing to support Macmillan locally by volunteering to help people with cancer with jobs around their homes such as gardening and DIY.

The call centre has a long history of community based activity and has been providing ongoing support for a child affected by the Nepal disaster and has recently provided sponsorship, through internal fundraising, to send her to school and allow her to receive a great education.

Amy Brady, the call centre manager at Truro, said: “All of the team at the Truro call centre are really generous when it comes to volunteering and fundraising; I am really proud of everything that the team have achieved and know that we will continue this success for the future.”

The call centre will be taking part in the national Macmillan event the World's Biggest Coffee morning in September.
