The annual dog-friendly Fal River Walk is only days away so organisers are urging people to dust off their walking boots and join in the fundraiser which this year will generate cash for the Merlin MS Centre and other Rotary charities.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen, the walk will take place next Sunday, September 25, and will take participants from the National Trust’s Trelissick House, around a circuit of the Fal Estuary. There are already nearly 100 walkers who have signed up to complete one of two routes, but more are welcome.

Special ferries will be laid on for the day from Restronguet Point to the Pandora, from Flushing to St Mawes, and from Turnaware to Trelissick pontoon, which will enable walkers to complete a 15 mile circuit of Carrick Roads on foot.

An alternative shorter route will begin with a ferry ride from Trelissick pontoon to St Mawes, before walkers complete the five mile coastal path from St Just-in-Roseland to Turnaware and the short ferry ride back to Trelissick.

Truro based hotelier, Merchant House has supported this year’s walk. Owner Nicky Whittaker, said: “We are very proud to sponsor this popular annual event. Our hotel caters for a fair share of walkers and their dogs, as well as cyclists and adventure seekers."

The event has been a successful charity fundraiser for the past eight years, raising many thousands of pounds for a range of good causes. This year, the Rotary Club shall be raising funds for the Merlin MS Centre at Hewas Water, near St Austell, a facility to support people with Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions.

"We are delighted to be working in partnership with National Trust Trelissick on this year’s Fal River Walk and want to raise as much as we can to support this excellent local charity,” said Frank Perry, chair of the Fal River Walk committee.

Lucy Chappell, community fundraiser for the charity said: “For many people, walking 15 miles will be a real challenge and one that will give them a true sense of achievement. For those living with a long term neurological condition like Multiple Sclerosis, life can present daily challenges. Cornwall has the highest rate of MS in mainland Britain and every penny raised will make a difference and help us to continue to provide our services to over 1000 registered users, their carers and their families.

"We are really excited to be working with the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen and are very grateful to have been chosen as their headlining charity for this year’s walk”.

Entry fees also provide free car parking at Trelissick and a cream tea at the end of the walk. Full details, including an online booking form, can be found at falriverwalk.co.uk.
