Young farmers dug deep to get the best results on Saturday when the annual ploughing match was held in Helston.

Organised as always by members of Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers Club, the event is one of the biggest fundraisers on the club calendar.

This year it raised money for two charities: the Headland Unit and the Urology Clinic both based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

They are charities that are close to the club's heart, with some members having a personal association.

The ploughing match was held at Higher Nansloe Farm and featured a range of classes, including both tractor and horse-drawn ploughing, for experienced and novice competitors.

There was also a range of domestic classes to enter, including cookery, crafts, photography and floral art.

Running alongside the main events of the day were a fun clay pigeon shoot, sheaf pitching competition and tractor pull, with the day ending with a disco.

Frances Hosken, from the club, said: "We were really pleased and everything went really smoothly.

"The weather couldn't have been better. Friday night we were panicking about how we were going to do it, but the sun shone on Saturday."

She added that the rain the previous night meant that the ground was too wet for combining or for other work, which meant that many of the farmers were able to attend the event instead.

Frances thanked the landowners, the Benney family, for the use of their fields for the event, adding: "Thank you as well to everybody who entered and helped on the day, as well as all of our sponsors."
