Two farmers from the Helston area are gearing up to take a gamble by driving a "banger" to Vegas in just four days.

Geoffrey Williams from St Martin and David Hain from Four Lanes, both members of Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers Club, have signed up to take part in the Banger Rally Challenge that will see them start in St Austell on October 6 and attempt to reach the Vegas finish line just four days later.

Rather than the gambling capital of the USA, however, their destination is the southern Spain version of Vegas - although with rules stating their car must cost less than £500 to buy, the 2,000 odd miles is still looking something of a challenge.

Already their first car, an old Jaguar, has died a death before even leaving the Lizard Peninsula and the pair are hastily finding a replacement with just weeks to go.

Despite this Geoffrey and David are raring to get going and help raise money for five charities: Children’s Hospice South West, the Merlin MS Project, Turn to Starboard, Cornwall Hospice Care, Cornwall Air Ambulance and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Last year's event saw around £200,000 raised by the 150 cars taking part.

Geoffrey told the Packet: "David and I both like our cars and have always raised money for charity in young farmers, so it just seemed like a really good mix of fun, travel and fundraising."

There is a fancy dress element to the challenge and their team name is Gentry Does It - meaning Tweed and linen suits, good manners and posh accents.

The rally is non-competitive and involves no racing or time trials, although there will be fun challenges along the way.

The pair are looking for sponsorship and donations to help their fundraising and in return are offering to add companies' logos on parts of the car - for £100 per panel a firm can put any advertising they wish, on a vinyl transfer. They are also hoping to fund fuel expenses. To help call Geoffrey on 07765 262420.
