The hoedown came to Helston on Saturday night as people joined local Rotarians for a barn dance and ceilidh at the Old Cattle Market.

The Rotary Club of Helston organised the event as its latest fundraiser in support the Macmillan Cove Appeal, and over 50 people turned up to dance the night away for a good cause.

Mick Timpson, the group's public relations officer, said: "It seems that now some of the people that were invited have got aching limbs, because there were some very enthusiastic dancers.

"It was very much enjoyed, and good fun by all accounts."

The dancers whirled the night away to the band Whipple Tree, who provided callers to help everyone with their moves, and musician Brian Curtis organised a spot of morris dancing as well.

The night made £640 for the club's appeal, which brings the total amount raised for the Cove by Helston's Rotarians to more than £10,000, which is expected to be handed over in the near future.

It is estimated that across Cornwall the Rotary Club will have raised around £35,000 for the Cove appeal, which will create a centre for cancer patients and their families, including information about how to cope with the disease and its treatment, a financial advice service, complementary therapies, and a room for young people affected by cancer.
