Students from Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union (FXU) took a break from their books to walk from the Penryn Campus to Pendennis Point, catching Pokémon, raising money for charity along the way.

FXU’s Pokémon Society held a charity walk as a fundraiser for Special Effect, a charity which helps people with disabilities play computer games. They raised a total of £71.20, which will go towards helping individuals become more confident and socially engaged.

Recently established, the Pokémon Society has seen its membership boom during the recent Fresher period. Sarah Curtis, society president, thinks nostalgia is a big factor. “A lot of people watched the TV show as a child. It’s a great platform for students to get together and reminisce.”

Fundraising has become a vital part of the student experience, with students constantly coming up with new and exciting ways to raise money for different charities. Pokémon GO has proved hugely popular and was an interesting twist on the traditional charity walk.

Kristy Wallace, FXU volunteering and RAD (Raise and Donate) manager, is pleased to see so many different student groups getting involved in fundraising. “Students are a great force when it comes to fundraising, last year raising over £75,000 for a number of different charities. It’s the small, original events like these that really make our students stand out from the rest.”
