A SERIES of promotional videos are being used to try and help Falmouth win a share of a £100,000 prize pot and be named as one of the best three coastal towns in the UK.

Falmouth has been shortlisted in the third annual Great British High Street competition and is battling against Prestatyn in Wales and Seaview, Cleethorpes, in the coastal towns category. Who wins is down to an online poll so the race is on to secure the most votes. You can vote everyday but only once within a 24 hour period. Falmouth is currently in second place so it needs your vote.

The Great British High Street competition is a Government-led scheme designed to celebrate the great work that is being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets, focusing on innovative marketing, festivals, evidence of proactive Town Teams and BIDs, volunteer community groups, regeneration and more.

This year’s competition saw a record 900 entries and now that the shortlist has been drawn up, the public has the chance to vote directly for their best-loved place online. Between now and November 18, people can cast votes for free via thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk.

If Falmouth wins, not only will the town get a share of a prize pot worth £100,000, but the Town Team will receive expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for business and attend a meeting at Twitter UK’s London office to further boost their social media presence to further benefit the town.

High Streets Minister Andrew Percy said: “Our high streets are the life and soul of towns, villages and cities across the country and the record number of competition entries this year is proof of their continued importance to local life. I want to wish all who’ve entered the very best of luck.”

Last year's competition saw 230 entries and attracted over 200,000 public votes, with Bishy Road in York, a former finalist, crowned Britain’s best. Bishy Road found that winning not only boosted town pride, but also had a tangible economic impact with retailers reporting increased footfall.

Falmouth BID manager Richard Wilcox said: “We’re delighted that our application has made it to the final three. We love Falmouth and our vibrant coastal community, and so applied to showcase the superb amount of proactive, innovative work going on in the town.

"There’s a great sense of community here, with volunteer cruise ship, town ambassadors, clean space, get active and other dedicated groups working so well alongside the business and resident sectors. All this ensures resources are utilised as effectively as possible for the benefit of all. We’re going to be pulling out all the stops to make sure lovers of Falmouth near and far know about Falmouth making the shortlist, and are encouraged to get online and vote for us.”

Alongside the public’s votes, shortlisted towns will also be inspected by a judging panel, made up of industry leaders from across retail, property and business, including British Land, the Post Office, M&S and Holland & Barratt.

To cast your Falmouth vote, go to http://thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk/finalist-coastal-community and follow @TheGBHighSt on Twitter. You can enter as many times as you wish, but only once in a 24 hour period. Voting closes on November 18 and the UK winners will be announced at a ceremony in December.
